Gear Up Florida

Orlando Day 2 (0 miles)

Today was our second day in Orlando and our last day off from cycling before the home stretch into Tallahassee. We were able to sleep in until 8 a.m. and catch up on some much needed rest. This morning the team made a friendship visit to an Easter Seals center to work with people with Alzheimer’s and dementia. We helped run the center’s carnival for their members, celebrating national older Americans month. The team manned the games, served up snow cones and cupcakes, and helped the members around the carnival. Many of the men were veterans and it was incredible to hear their stories. After the carnival, we headed inside to have some lunch and play a few rounds of bingo before we took our team photo and headed back to lodging.

The night’s dinner and friendship visit was held at Russell Home, a loving place where children with disabilities live, learn, and grow. The organization is funded by donations and Push America’s grant to them will be used to expand and improve their home. At the visit we were able to meet and hangout with the residents, including one boy who was born with only a brainstem. The love and care he has received at Russell’s Home, however, increased his life expectancy from a few weeks to many years. This is why it is so important to fund these wonderful organizations and it shows the team how special and rewarding it is to visit the people we are riding and raising money and awareness for.
